Custom Heating Cable Buyer’s Guide: 825 Alloy, 321, 310S Specifications

The email from Texas that changed how I think about custom heating cables

Last month, an engineer named Mark at a chemical plant outside Houston emailed us a spec sheet:

Material: 825 alloy. Voltage: 220V. Wattage: 12kW. Length: 50 meters per cable. Quantity: 8 cables. Lead time: 3 weeks max. Application: reactor vessel heating, sulfuric acid environment, max operating temp 950°C.

He closed with: “My previous supplier said 8 weeks minimum. I need you to tell me if 3 weeks is realistic.”

I forwarded the email to our production manager at 7:42 AM Beijing time. By 8:15 AM he replied: “We can do it. 825 alloy is in stock, MgO powder sourced, 8 cables × 50m = 400m total — extruder capacity fine, sealing tests need 5 days.”

I called Mark at 9:30 AM his time. Sent him a sample of 825 alloy cable strand that afternoon. The production batch shipped on day 19. Mark’s plant got everything installed before the scheduled turnaround.

That email taught me something: most “custom heating cable buyers” aren’t really looking for a catalog — they’re looking for an engineer who can read their spec sheet and tell them honestly if 3 weeks is doable.

This article is for engineers like Mark. Below is what we actually make, what the material differences really mean, and how we work on tight specs.

825 vs 321 vs 310S — what the material numbers actually mean in your plant

I get asked this question every week. Here’s the practical version, not the textbook version.

825 Alloy (Incoloy 825) — when you need high temperature + corrosion resistance

This is what Mark’s plant needed. 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum and copper. The practical difference:

  • Max continuous operating temp: ~1100°C (much higher than 321 or 316L)
  • Corrosion resistance: excellent in sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, seawater — Mark’s “sulfuric acid environment” was the giveaway
  • Cost: roughly 2.5x the price of 321 stainless for the same diameter
  • Welding: requires TIG with ERNiCrMo-3 filler — not all job shops can do this cleanly

If your spec says “high temp + corrosive environment + 220V,” you’re probably looking at 825. Mark’s setup hit all three.

321 Stainless Steel — the workhorse for chemical pipelines

321 is the most common “middle ground” heating cable material:

  • Max continuous operating temp: ~870°C (lower than 825, but higher than 304)
  • Corrosion resistance: good in mild chemicals, food-grade, general industrial — NOT for strong acids
  • Cost: 1x baseline (most economical)
  • Welding: standard TIG, any qualified shop can do it

If your spec says “general industrial heating, 220V, ≤870°C,” 321 is the right answer. We make more 321 cable than any other SKU.

310S Stainless Steel — when you need the temperature ceiling

310S has the highest chromium + nickel content of the three, so it handles the most heat:

  • Max continuous operating temp: ~1100°C (similar to 825, but different chemistry)
  • Corrosion resistance: good in oxidizing environments (high-temp air), but worse than 825 in reducing acids
  • Cost: 1.8x baseline
  • Welding: standard TIG

If your spec says “high temp in air, not aggressive chemistry,” 310S is more economical than 825.

316L — when you need food / pharma grade

316L has molybdenum, which makes it the standard for food processing, pharma, and marine applications:

  • Max continuous operating temp: ~870°C (similar to 321)
  • Corrosion resistance: excellent in chloride environments (seawater, food salts)
  • Cost: 1.4x baseline

If your spec mentions “food contact” or “marine environment,” 316L is the right answer.

How we actually run a custom spec — the real process

Engineers keep asking me “what’s your MOQ” and “what’s your lead time” before they’ve sent the spec. The honest answer is: I can’t answer either question without seeing the spec sheet. Here’s why.

Step 1 — You send us the spec sheet (or 5 bullet points if no formal sheet)

The minimum info we need:

  1. Voltage (220V? 380V? Custom?)
  2. Wattage per meter (W/m) or total wattage
  3. Length per cable
  4. Cable diameter (φ4 is standard, but we do φ3 to φ12)
  5. Sheath material (825 / 321 / 310S / 316L / other)
  6. Max operating temperature
  7. Environment (air / liquid / vacuum / chemical — and which chemical)
  8. Quantity

If you don’t know all 8, send what you know — we’ll help you figure out the rest.

Step 2 — Our engineer reviews and replies within 24 hours

We confirm: feasibility, material recommendation, sample cost, sample lead time, batch lead time.

Step 3 — Sample (if needed)

For new specs, we usually send a 1-2 meter sample for you to test before committing to batch production. Sample cost depends on materials — 825 alloy samples run $150-300 per meter, 321 samples run $30-60 per meter.

Step 4 — Production batch

Once sample is approved: 15-25 days for batch (depending on queue + material availability).

Step 5 — QC documentation

Every batch ships with: material certificates (825 / 321 / 310S / 316L traceability), insulation resistance test report, dimensional inspection, hi-pot test report.

What we don’t do (and why)

To save your time, here’s what we’re not the right fit for:

  • 110V / 120V household heating — we focus on 220V industrial / commercial. For 110V applications, look at consumer heating cable suppliers.
  • Floor heating mats for residential — different product category. We don’t make these.
  • Custom shapes that aren’t cable or vacuum heater form factor — we do cable and vacuum heater. For other shapes, we can refer you to partner factories.
  • Orders under 50 meters total — minimum order quantity for custom specs is 50m (sample orders excepted).
